Questions before purchasing ReadyNAS
At my work, we are looking into replacing a damage 4TB NAS
after looking into NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10441D-100NAS) 4TB at http://www.cnet.com/network-storage/netgear-readynas-104-rn10441d/4507-3382_7-35654171.html , I still have few concerned that wasn't fully answered by normal spec details or review.
The unit will be mainly used to store media files (picture and videos for designers).
We currently have two different types NAS, Buffalo Link-station and iOmega x4-200d but both are age and we have found issues with them.
1. Read and Write speed confirmation needed on Gigabit network.
I know there are many factors that will determine this, but what is the average read and write speed when ReadyNAS is the bottleneck in ideal environment or what speed the users experience. I'm just looking for 20 -30 Mbyte/s or 160 to 240 Mbps Read/Write speed, anything higher will be gravy
Reason: Buffalo link-station have write speed of 3-4MBytes/s and full backup from one link station to another link station of 3.5 TB takes 10 days on gigabit network. It's maximum read speed is also 12-15 MBytes/s. iOmega on other hand have Read at 30MBps and Writes at 20MBps when transferring single large files
2. Any hard drive comparability issue?
From what I read on FAQ, I think it accepts any type of HD like computers, and speed is determine by the slowest HD. I just want to confirm this is true if we have to replace one of the HD due to failure after HD warranty runs out.
Reason : iOmega uses special 5900 rpm HD and standard 5400 or 7200 HD will not work with it. iOmega does even have the list of compatible HD when we had to replace one of the HD. It was huge hassle and 5900 rpm drive cost 1.5 to 2x more than normal drive of same size.
3. Ability to detect and write to 4TB USB External HD and have daily incremental/differential backup capability with machine's firmware
Reason: My boss prefers to back up the media files from NAS to a 4TB external USB HD. Currently I am performing this via Windows NT backup as our NAS's firmware can't recognize 4tb HD. However, some sites do not have a server and we wish to get a machine that have independent backup capability to an 4TB USB 3.0 HD.
I would be grateful if anyone can answer above questions for me so I can recommend the ReadyNAS for my company.
Thank you

I measure about 50 Mbytes/sec read and write with my RN102, when copying a gigabyte file. That is with Western Digital WD30EFRX drives in a jbod configuration. RAID-5 write speeds would be slower, read speeds should be the same.Palvati wrote: 1. Read and Write speed confirmation needed on Gigabit network...
Though some folks here have reported that performance is slower with multiple users. The RN1xx products are entry level, you will get faster speeds from RN3xx or RN5xx platforms.
Netgear has a compatibility list here: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=82 Other drives often work [but not always]. However, Netgear can/will deny support if you move off their HCL. Also, it is wise to search this forum for your drive model before you purchase - often other ReadyNAS owners will post their experiences.Palvati wrote: 2. Any hard drive comparability issue?...
USB backup is a "yes". Not sure about 4 TB capacities as I haven't tried that. The RN104 also has eSata.Palvati wrote: 3. Ability to detect and write to 4TB USB External HD and have daily incremental/differential backup capability with machine's firmware...
