I should add that I have 29 TB of free space so I would like to run the system with seven drives rather than purchase a replacement

At this point, you better care about backup your data....

  Zach217: RAID redundancy is not enough to keep your data safe. Even if you hadn't had a failed disk, you'd still need a backup plan for that.
