With the lan set at 192.168.2.1 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 should have looked at ALL IPs in 192.168 range and should have seen 192.168.1.1,
I agree it should have connected with that subnet mask.. RAIDar uses its own multicast messages for discovery, so if multicast/broadcast isn't enabled in the router (or is blocked in PC internet security software) it won't find the NAS.

Dhcp is enabled on router.
I suggest going connecting the NAS back to the router then, and using the factory reset procedure. The process is described on page 43-44 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/RN_OS_6_Desktop_HW_UM_12Oct2015.pdf.
If you still see the funky boxes on the LCD screen when you do the reset procedure, then the next step would be to try a USB recovery. That process is here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29952/~/readynas-os-6%3A-usb-recovery-tool The NAS can be picky on the USB drives, so you might need to try more than one.

Put lan ip at 192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.100, disabled all other lans. Powered up readynas. RAIDar still says no readynas found. Did try the factory reset earlier, no avail, same issue. Had tried usb recovery, but only 1 usb, wintec. Will put it on couple of others and try it. Per the instructions says to use front USB. Would it matter front or back?
Thanks

I'm not sure, but I think it does matter. The NAS is of course booting from the USB stick.
The front port is USB-2 btw.

Would the RAIDar usb recovery work also
If you mean OS4, then no. The RN204 only runs OS6.

Tried 4 different usb manufactures. Sans, Sony, Wintex, HP. Put USB OS6 recovery. Still the same. Removed all 4 2tb drives. Put in 1 older (working) 320g drive. Retried usb recovery. Still same. Check warranty, has chassy warranty for 3 years BUT only covers original owner. So, no luck getting help from Netgear.
Still think it software/firmware issue.

Powers on
Get 'welcome' message in LED (not LCD) panel then solid boxes in LED, then blank.
Hear harddrive spinup. (have front door open)
Power light solid blue, drive light comes on (only 1 drive), ACT comes on (no ethernet cable plugged in), LED display goes to all boxes again.
Reconnected ethernet (disabled all other lans) reran IP scan on 192.168.0-255.0-255.
Only my pc now showing up. Am searching web how to turn on dhcp server in windows10.

Can you return the used NAS to the seller?
Also did you check 192.168.168.168?

Hi old1mike,
Have you considered connecting it to your network (since it's using DHCP by default, it would easily obtain an IP address) or on another PC.
Hope this helps!
Kind regards,

I initially did. Thought it pulled ip from router, but upon further investigation didn't. RAIDar said it could find and NAS also.
That is why I put in on pc local lan to further check. Am running windows10. Am trying to install DHCP service and allocate that lan as the server. The RN204 should work as long as it is requesting an IP. So far the DHCP server is reporting nothing is requesting an IP. Also, find it strange, if lan configured as static ip 192.168.1.1 and I power on RN204 windows complains about IP conflict, meaning the NAS as set as static. Set lan to 192.168.1.2 and windows does not complain. If I open firefox and put in 192.168.1.1 wont connect. IPscanner does not see 192.168.1.1, does see 192.168.1.2.

This is strange, because the NAS should be failing over to 192.168.168.168 if DHCP is not enabled on the network. And if the NAS is configured for a static IP address by the previous owner, then it shouldn't be changing. 192.168.1.1 would be a very unusual choice for a static IP address, since most home routers default to x.x.x.1.
So its hard to fathom why the NAS was using 192.168.1.1 in the first place, and why that would change to 192.168.1.2 with no DHCP. It is also odd that IPscanner is seeing the address and RAIDar isn't.
Since you aren't seeing the proper boot sequence with disks installed, I am thinking you purchased a defective unit.

My gut is telling me hardware fine. Unit boots from NAND. I think it is corrupted. Since I do not have serial connection hardware, and am not that good with Debian cant check. This site has some great info on hardware/firmware http://natisbad.org/NAS8/. I has a Buffalo nas. Lan crapped out, but there were utilities where I could reload OS that did not require any special hardware or Linux knowledge. I am very impressed with the Netgear nas hardware wise (seems to be built pretty solid). Would like to keep unit if it is only software issue. I keep looking. Thanks for info.
