RAIDar reports "bad disks detected" during Boot

Having prepared myself for loosing all data, I shut down the ReadyNAS and carried on with the following steps:
1. Reboot with no disks. RAIDAR reported missing disks, so I guessed that the ReadyNAS itselv was OK.
2. Shut down an reboot with only the old disk1 placed in bay 1.
The ReadyNAS booted nicely and no data was lost. Otherwise I would have concluded that disk1 was defect, and my plan was then to repeat with only disk 2 in bay 2.
