Help me buying a new ReadyNAS: looking at the 524x
Hi, Since my Ultra 2 is having unresolved V+12 voltage warnings, I am looking at a new NAS. Here are my needs: - 4 bays to run 2x RAID 1 volumes: 2 x 8TB disks for video and 2x 4TB disks for da...

A quick feedback to close topic:
Encryption has no performance impact on the 524X, so it seems to benefit completely of the AES-NI cpu instructions
The CPU is the Pentium D1508, Netgear should be really clear and precise about it, as Intel makes things confusing
Transcoding is good for my needs, even from reasonable 30 Mbps 4K material to a 1080p output using Plex
HEVC to x264 transcoding for 1080p sources is also very smooth
Power usage at idle is around 35-38W, which is excellent for my needs
I am mainly happy because of a great increase in my backup speed compared to my old Ultra 2. Backup tasks with small files is near 10x faster and multiple file copy is smooth when it was near impossible
Some performance tests:

The fact is that Netgear omitted the Pentium and added a "-" sign writing D-1508 instead of D1508
So, what remains:
- hardware encryption actually uses the AES-NI instructions supported by the D1508 ? Hopefully that means encryption with quiet no performance impact as the RN716 reviews I saw
- what steps should I do to migrate ?
* put the 2 disks from Ultra 2 directly on the RN524x
* start it, and later I add the 2 new disks
* it will ask me to create a new volume on the 2 new disks that will be in raid 1 ?

http://www.netgear.com/business/products/storage/readynas/RN524X.aspx#tab-techspecs: "Intel D1508 Dual Core 2.2GHz Server Processor" -> Imprecise, should say Pentium.
https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/storage/ReadyNAS_RN524X_RN526X_RN528X_DS_09Dec16.pdf: "Intel® D-1508 Dual Core 2.2GHz Server Processor" -> Imprecise and wrong. It should say Pentium and the correct name is D1508.
http://www.netgear.com/business/products/storage/readynas/RN626X.aspx#tab-techspecs: "Intel D-1521 Quad Core 2.4GHz Xeon Server Processor" -> OK.
https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/storage/ReadyNAS_RN620_DS_08Dec16.pdf: "Intel® D-1521 Quad Core 2.4GHz Xeon Hyper Threaded Server Processor" -> OK. Though, I'm not sure why they added Hyper Threaded here. The Pentium D1508 also uses Hyper-Threading.

If you boot the RN524X with the disks from the Ultra 2, it will boot like the Ultra 2, on the old system, with the old settings and with the old data volume.
If you want to use the latest OS6.7.1, you'll have to perform a Factory Default with both drives in the chassis (wiping all data and settings from it). I'd advise you to update the F/W before performing the Factory Default.
It works both ways:
- Put all four disks in the NAS. Perform a Factory Default. Access the GUI. The NAS will have a single RAID5 volume on all four drives, which is not what you want. Disable X-RAID. Destroy the volume. Create two separate volumes as wanted.
- Put the first two disks in the NAS. Perform a Factory Default. Access the GUI. The NAS will have a RAID1 volume on the two drives, which is what you want. Disable X-RAID. Insert the other two drives. Create the second volume as wanted.
If you don't have the other two drives yet, then the second option is the most relevant one.

If the ultra is running 4.2.x, then the RN524x will boot with the ultra disks installed, but the volume will be read-only. You then need to copy the data to a USB drive and do a factory reset - restoring the data back when you are done. The procedure is described here: https://kb.netgear.com/29957/ReadyNAS-Migrating-disks-from-RAIDiator-4-2-to-ReadyNAS-OS-6-x86 IMO, it's simpler to just back up the data while it's still on the ultra-2.
If the ultra is already running OS 6, you can migrate the disks, and no factory reset is needed.

Ultra 2 is on OS 6.6.1
If I can avoid wiping my data and restore, it will be a must
Can I disable X-Raid without wiping my data ?
About encryption: it is mainly on holidays. I take one of my disks with me and keep the other in the NAS at home, so encryption is useful if I loose the disk I have taken out or the remaining one is stolen

X-RAID is a feature (automatic management of volume creation/expansion). You can disable it, it won't do anything to your existing volume.

I had never heard of that before, but the KB article says the same.
