ReadyNAS 524X performance: encryption and transcode

I post again as previous topic got broken and locked!

I just got my new RN524X

* Encrypted tests are done on a single disk, no RAID protection, Seagate NAS 4 TB disk

* Un-encrypted tests are done on a Seagate Enterprise NAS 8TB RAID 1 setup

Common:

- MTU: 1500

- IPv6 disabled (enabling it didn't impact performance of all my tests

- 1 GB LAN connection as I have no 10GB router/Switch/adapter to test

- PC source is a SSD disk and Windows 7 with 32 GB RAM

Encrypted performance tests

Conclusion

- Encryption is benefiting from the AES-NI set in CPU with no performance drop

- Compression is done with very little performance drop

- My AV and Firewall software on PC are what impacts the most my read performance from the NAS

  • Based on smallnetbuilder.com the read/write performance is what to be expected on 1 GB LAN

    For the 626X:

10 GB LAN is 3-4x these....

I will upgrade once prices drop

      I tested transcoding

      - It can perfectly transcode HEVC 1080p videos to x264 at 1080p

      - I tested a 30 Mbps HEVC 4K video and it could be transcoded to x264 at 1080p

Probably it will depend on audio embedded and on the bitrate of source

I am happy that it can manage HEVC and 4K transcode for reasonable 30 Mbps bitrates
