Hi PatrickH,
Have you tried a different external USB 3.0 HDD? How about connect it your a Windows PC and scan for errors using its Disk-Error Checking tool and. Let me know if that makes a difference.

No difference using a different USB 3.0 drive.
Now even the front USB2 port is incredibly slow using rsync backup to usb hard drive.
Has taken 5 hours to transfer 25.6GB, that is only 1.5 megabytes per second.
