ReadyDLNA / ReadyMedia uses all CPU
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v1 with RAIDiator 4.1.14 and minidlna 1.1.4 When adding pictures and videos all is well. But when I add music, it will index my mp3s and keeps using al CPU for days. I need to...
Not sure there is a good solution - the NV+ sparc processor isn't very fast, and nothing will change that.
Options include running the DLNA server on a PC (but still using the NV+ as for media storage) and/or getting a new and faster NAS.
So, I understand this behaviour is by design?
I find that unbelievable and unlogical, for minidlna get into low CPU state with just movies and pictures!
Considered the NV+ isn't up to today standards, I bet it has been up-to-date in earlier days!
So why didn't the development team optimise the software for the hardware?
I suggest you try to provide a more credible answer, or I'll find an other brand NAS where the software does not bring down performance!
I don't for Netgear, so as far as I'm concerned you can buy any NAS you want. I give honest answers here, and I call them as I see them.
Netgear stopped selling your NAS back in 2011. It's sparc v1 processor is slow and by 2011 it was no longer competitive. Newer ReadyNAS all use x86 and arm processors. Even the entry-level RN104 is about 3x faster than your NV+.
On the positive side, the product is built like a tank (mine is also still in service), but it is not fast, and it is limited to 2 TB disks or smaller..
I don't know the size of your music library, so there's no way I can gauge whether the scanning times are typical or not. There are a couple things you could check - in particular whether you have 4K sector alignment (see http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/06/22/why-you-might-want-to-factory-reset-a-sparc-readynas/ ). You could check the disk health, since a failing disk will kill performance. Or just do a factory reset, reload the data from backup, and see what happens.
Those ideas might increase overall performance somewhat, but there is no magic incantation that will turn your NAS into something its not.
FWIW, if you think it is getting stuck scanning one file, then the debug toggle app in your link should help you figure out what file that is.
