Thanks for the responses and links- I downgraded to 4.1.8 and DLNA 1.0.2 4.3 but still the same outcome.
The reason I presume it's a file size issue is because of the files it hangs on: they're mkv's that play fine but are around 6 gig or higher in size- moving them to a separate folder allows the scan to progress, but I have to force a re-scan from the beginning each time this happens.
I'm just installing the debug log addon and will post the results...
