Can you give 6.5.0 Beta a try? We have made some changes in Beta 1. Furthermore, if you are using the anti-virus service Beta 1 has some improvements with further ones to come in Beta 2.

With respect, if this beta software (which is beta for one very good reason) causes me problems is someone from Netgear going to call around and fix my NAS straight away or will this be yet another 5 month wait?

Often developers will directly diagnose/resolve beta issues (instead of support channels). And in this case downgrading to 6.4.x is simple (no reset required).
As you know, I didn't see any lockups with USB backup (though testing was limited), and performance was 7-8 MB/s for NTFS using the front USB-2 port.

If you install beta firmware unless support suggests it in a support case then you would come to the community here for help if you run into issues on it.
JoopB was using anti-virus and the anti-virus issue was the problem for him. By continuing to post about a different issue in this thread you've made your problem harder to follow. It is best if different issues are discussed in separate threads.
