1. I don't have a ReadyNAS but read in the manual. I think it's not supported. What you need is a RAID 1 Volume using half of each drive and a RAID 0 volume using the other space. But with XRAID you can't configure that at all and in Flex Raid you can't use partitions but only whole drives. Linux can do that, so it could be possible using the command line, but that is for pro's and might lead to problems because scripts etc. do not expect that.
edit: You could use Raid 0 over both drives and manually backup your photos on an additional usb drive. For important data that is a good idea even if you had RAID 1.
