What version of ReadyNAS OS are you running?
For several years there have been NAS units that can't saturate gigabit ethernet. 45Mb/s is still a lot better than ~ 10Mb/s you would get using 100Mbit ethernet
The second NIC would be there for automatic failover (if you choose a teaming mode with this) or for connecting to a second network.
