ReadyNAS 104 Backup

Hi

I have 2 problems with my backup.

OS 6.1.2 - Firstly when I try and back up system config as described on the backup tab in settings I check "everything" which turns the "download configuration archive" button to grey but I click it and nothing happens or downloads. Both IE and Firefox are the same.

Secondly I'm trying to backup my stored files to a USB external drive. It has only ever worked once and backed up via the front USB port. Its USB 3 and is recognised by the system. I can go into Browse and add files to it, but if I try to backup to the "usb front " or "top rear usb" etc I get a device cannot be mounted message. If I try and do it to the share that's automatically created when I connect the drive it tells me "destination cannot be accessed".

This despite I can see it in the software and add files by drag and drop into the web interface!! Its really frustrating!

I've tried all kinds of disk options, set up as MBR disk with EXT3 partition, NTFS partition or set up as GPT disk with EXT3 or NTFS partition.

Please help - anyone know what format I should use for the disk and what might be going wrong. No point having a NAS if I can't back the flipping thing up!!

Thanks
Neil

  • Sorry - I cant help, other than to say.. I have a ReadyNas102 on 6.1.2 and ...

    1. I did as you described and the backup worked for me.. it took a few seconds after hitting the download button. .but I got the prompt to download/save. I am on Win7 64 bit and IE10.

    2. I have been disappointed and frustrated with the backup capability (see my posts). Although I not backing up to USB - I did find the backup had difficulty in recognising the write destination - even though it had not reported issued when I told it to test the connection.

Lets hope more experienced people can help you.
    Cheers

I haven't tried USB backup on the RN102 for quite a while - if I have a chance I'll try to test it.

On the format, there are various points of view. Mine is that you should consider what machine you'd be reading the backup from if the NAS fails. In my case, that would be a windows machine, so I use NTFS. EXT3 should also work (and likely backs up faster). But a backup you can't easily access is not very useful.

The RN102 should handle both MBR and GPT. If the UWB disk is > 2 TB of course you will need GPT.

Which USB model do you use? Is it Seatate USB3.0 2TB 9SEAN2-500?
if it is this model USB disk, it has USB3.0 compatibility issue on RN102, 104, 312 and RN314.
  • Well it doesn't seem to matter what I do or how I format it will not do it. Either a message to say the device can't be mounted or can't be accessed depending on if backup to usb or share is selected. This despite it having worked in the past (pre upgrade to the latest firmware) and that I can manual drag and drop files to it using the web interface. Stupid.

So now I have to leave my PC on, with the drive connected and back up over the network. Regretting my purchase.

Thanks - god knows why mine doesn't then. I'm using Win 7 64bit and IE10. Or Firefox 23.0.1. Click the download button and it never does anything :?

Anyone know another way to back up the config?

Try support (phone if you purchased within 90 days, otherwise support.netgear.com)

    ..........

I have exactly the same problem with a new unit now running firmware 6.1.3 - no response on using the "Download Configuration Archive" button on FF or IE 9.

Ok, I have just talked to Netgear support about another issue with my 104 and there are issues if there is no "Data" volume in the device. Apparently many apps and functions assume that the default "Data" volume exists to use it, and possibly this backup problem is related to it as my device no longer has a volume with this name.

Of course you cannot rename an existing volume, you have to blow it away and recreate it with the "Data" name...... :(

About "ReadyNAS 104 backup & restore issue", I test on my own RN104, firmware 6.1.3 , use many pieces of small files, found no problem.I don't know what kind of operation, will lead to this problem. So if it's convenient for you, can you contact support , we remote assistance?
  • Same problem with my new RN312, but I have a simple (though a little inconvenient) workaround which appears to allow my backup(s) to proceed.

I am using an EXT4 format USB3 drive (Seagate ST3000DM001-1E6166, 3TB "backup drive"). My ReadyNAS is running firmware v6.1.6. I use EXT4 as it supports long filenames and backups complete very quickly. The backup disk can be mounted on Ubuntu 12 in case something goes wrong with the NAS itself.

If I attach the drive without any further action, it shows up on each of my backup jobs as available (I backup individual shares and so I have several backup jobs that are triggered in sequence from the front panel button).

However, I have found that, once the drive is attached, if I go to the backup jobs page, select the options for one of the backups that uses the external volume, step through the options to the end (without changing anything), click on "Apply" then click on "OK", then everything works as expected. I can start my backup with the button, or each backup job individually from the browser. This has worked for me in the few (approx 4) times I have backed up my new NAS.

Hope that this helps some of the others experiencing the same problem. Also, hopefully it can give the developers some direction that can help them locate and fix the issue.
