This suggests that disk 1 failed, and then you replaced disk 4. That will destroy the RAID array.

That is the thing, I wasn't even home. This all just happened. And now it looks like I have lost everything. My theory is the array is just broken. Can this be rebuilt at all?
Support have offered the Data Recovery at a cost of about $275AUD. Would that do it?
It is a lot of money and I don't want to just throw it away...

Unfortunately there are no guarantees on data recovery (one reason why I always recommend at least one backup to a different device). But at this point if you want your data back, you will need to use some form of data recovery.
Another option is to try ReclaiMe - a data recovery package that some users have used successfully. That will require you to connect your hard drives to a windows PC (either with SATA or USB). ReclaiMe is also expensive, but it will give you some idea of what it can recover before you pay for it.

Thank you. This software states connect all NAS drives to one PC. Would that include the failed drive from disk one or just the three remaining.
Furthermore, what would be causing random remove/add of drives without physical interaction? This is what probably caused the issue in the first place...
