ReadyNAS 104 Disks thrashing

I have a ReadyNAS 104 at home and I often only access it in the evenings. Normally the unit has gone into standby mode and there is no disk activity. Almost every time I go to use my PC the disks are asleep. Often whilst I am using my PC the disks go to sleep as they are not being accessed.

However, I recently upgraded the firmware to version 6.10.10 and now there is constant disk thrashing activity. The unit never goes into standby. This is happening almost 24 hours a day.. Very occasionally there will be a break of a few minutes and then the disk thrashing restarts.

Since installing 6.10.10 I have continued to use the unit as normal and there has been no significant increase or decrease in the amount of data held on the NAS drive. The logs show Snapshots and Backups are done just after midnight and are complete in a few minutes. The logs show no other activity and I have no idea what is going on.

The unit has 4.6TB of 10.9TB free. There is no antivirus or any other software installed on the NAS. If I disconnect the network cable and the USB cable to the backup device, the disks continue to thrash

I have tried rebooting the unit but this does not fix the problem.

I would be grateful if someone could you advise me how to find out what is going on and how to resolve this issue and stop the constant disk thrashing.

Start by downloading the log zip file, and looking in there for any floods of errors.

Did you have ReadyCloud enabled at some point in the past?

      Hi

      Thanks for your help.

I have downloaded the logs. I had a quick look at the biggest ones, but nothing obvious. The logs go back many years as I have never cleared them. The biggest log is where is msmtp log where the system is trying to send me emails saying backups successful but cannot authenticate. I will remedy that.

Do you think the best approach might be to clear the log files so I can see what is happening more easily from now forwards.

        I wouldn't clear the logs.

Have you looked in systemd-journal.log?  I am wondering if there are leafp2p errors in there.
