I am running a rn104, which is being a little troublesome.It has the latest firmware installed, but ever since I upgraded 6.2.x versions, I get errors playing video files from a share on the Readynas. My playback computer is a Windows7 machine, and I use VLC as the video player.When I start playback, it usually plays for a few minutes, and the VLC shows an error message stating it could not playback the file due to a "Bad file descriptor". If I restart the video, it mostly plays fine.All my other access to the NAS works fine, I play a lot of video from the Readynas on my KODI/XBMC media center, which streams via an NFS share. This never gives me problems.Anybody got any ideas to what could be wrong?

I got an RN716 with FW v6.2.2 and have some movies stored in it. I have just recently downloaded and installed the latest VLC player on my PC running Windows7 Ultimate 64-bit. It seems just fine watching a movie from my RN716 using VLC player though I haven't yet fully completed the movie until now. I stopped at a certain portion of the movie because I felt sleepy and will continue watching it when I have the time. By the way, my PC and my NAS are all wired through my network :DHave you tried to uninstall/reinstall VLC player?Have your tried to reboot your RN104 as well as your Windows7 PC?Have you tried using another PC/laptop if ever you have?Are you watching a movie using the VLC player via a wireless connection?

The chance of a file playing without problems is less than 50%.VLC is un / reinstalled whenever I upgrade. The problem has persisted over a least one upgrade of VLC.My NAS shuts down and reboots itself every night / morning, on a schedule. My Windows PC is off whenever I'm not using it. Not Hibernating or in stand-by, but proberly turned off. So it has a reboot at least once every day.I havent seen the problem on my laptop, but I don't use it much for videos.The connection from the Readynas to the PC having problems is through a Gigabit Wired LAN, using a Netgear GS108T managed switch.I have an older Readynas NV+ in service also. Playback of videos from that unit _never_ fails.I suspect some kind of error / incompatibility with the RN104 and my Windows 7 setup, I just don't know what it might be.As said, playback from my mediacenter unit, is allways without errors (from both NAS'es).

What if you try to connect your RN104 directly to your PC then check if you will get the same error msg: "Bad file descriptor" when you play a movie???Also, you may want to try the Beta FW v6.2.3 and it might help: viewtopic.php?t=78866

I have not tried a direct connection, and dont see the point, as I would not be able to use it that way, so its an impractical solution. And all my network traffic (also from another Netgear NAS) to this PC is working fine, so I doubt there is something wrong with the network.But I do have the network connection from the NAS to the switch configured as a bond, which both the NAS and my switch supports, but I will try turning this feature off, to see if that solves anything.I have actually been running 6.2.3 Beta 6 for a few days, without it solving the issue. Otherwise the Beta seems perfectly stable, havent experienced any problems due to it being Beta.

The point of a direct-connection is to help to isolate the cause of the problem. It is not meant to be a solution, but rather to help with diagnosing the problem.What protocol are you using for accessing the share from your PC?

For the last days I have been using Windows Media Player (WMP) instead of VLC.
For the first 2 or 3 days playback was fine and I was thinking it could be a solution to use WMP, but then Yesterday I got an error reading something like this from WMP "Playback stopped due to an unknown error". Restarting playback works imediatly, and then the file plays without error.

Much the same problem I experience with VLC, just VLC's error message is different.
My conclusion is that the error is not only present with VLC.

But why does this error only show itself while I'm playing video's, and why can I copy files to and from the NAS without errors from the same computer?
Why is playback of the same files fine on my media center fine through NFS?

I'm really puzzled by this, also because I never saw this problem before updating to 6.2.

I'm actually sorry that I did, as in hindsight I would rather have stayed on 6.1.9, since that seemed to work without errors for me.

Well since no one seemed to know anything about my errors, and since it didn't help with other media players, I gave up trying to fix this.

Instead I have installed Kodi/XBMC, and uses this as a media player. With Kodi I can access my shares via. NFS, and since I set this up, I havent had one single error in streaming videos from my RN104.

I still believe there is a bug in the RN104's SMB access. But for now I have found a solution that works for me.

I'll just make a quick followup to this problem.

About a week ago I installed 6.2.5 RC1. This seems to have fixed the issue on my system. I havent had one single playback stop since I installed this.

And the NAS seems quite a bit faster in the user interface too.
