ReadyNAS 104 out of memory 300 firmware 6.9.2

hi everyone

i have a readynas 104 - software ver is 6.9.2 - hdd 4 x 2tb drives.

I had a power cut 3 nights ago  and ever since that night my nasbox  activity light is flashing like a **bleep**.  I assumed it is doing a resync after the power cut so i let it run.  During this time i cannot  get any access to the admin page(timing out), connect via ssh(connection refused) or see it on my network.  After about 3 hours i get a "out of memory error 300" and the box hangs and all buttons become unresponsive so i pull the power and reconect wich triggers another resync which contimues for a few hours then hangs, but this time with no error message, so i pull the plug and off we go again then i get a hang with the error message.. you can see the cycle. the weird thing is it seems to alternate between "out of memory 300" first then just hangs with no message, then back to the out of memory error and so on.  I manage to get the admin page to connect for 3 mins when the box first boots so i turned off antivirus, and readydlna but then  the box starts it activity and the page times out and the errors re-appear. raidar reports a healthy system and all drives good before it looses connection to the box.   i managed to get 1 set of logs and did one diagnostic which said drive 4 has "Pending Sector count =2".  I am at my wits end as i cannot access my data and i am stuck in this cycle of pulling the cord when it hangs. Please, Please, Please if anyone can point me in the right direction i would be very grateful as i need to get my data...

Thanks in advance

P.S i am very tech minded and can follow very technical instructions..my ssh commands are pretty non exsistant as i have never worked on debian systems but as i said can follow instructions very well. Thanks

  • Hi

    System Fixed!

Firstly to mdgm THANKS for your time in trying to help me i really appreciate it..:)

It seems that the snapshots were the cause of the "out of memory error"  I didn't realise that the system was taking snapshots everyday and keeping them for upto 3 years, the oldest one was dated 2014.

I have a backup of my data and could have done a factory reset but i wanted to try and fix this first.

    The fix:

Due to the power cut this forced the system to do a rescan and coz of there being loads of snapshots the system run out of memory.  I managed to delete some before the system hung again and noticed that as there were less snapshots the system was running for longer, so i kept rebooting and deleteing snapshots until i got the system to a state where i could delete almost all of them. After reboot the system started to behave and I went through and disabled all snapshots from my shares.  However there were some snapshots that seemed to be orphaned and i could not delete them but the system was now stable but running very slow.  So i did a OS Reinstall from the boot menu as suggested by mdgm and now the system appears to be stable , runnuing a proper speeds AND i was able to delete all the remaining snapshots which gave me back 1TB of disk space!!  I have done 5 reboots as a test and everything is running normal ,phew!!  I have turned off all snapshots, quotas and bitrot protection and hopefully it won't happen again.

I hope this helps someone who is having similar trouble.

    FYI to everyone:

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR DATA  INCASE YOU HAVE TO DO A FACTORY RESET!       I WAS LUCKY!!!!

Thanks again to a great supportive community and remember,
