ReadyNAS 214 Drives Running Constantly
Ever since I added two 16TB drives to my original pair of 4TB drives, the drives are being accessed constantly. Nothing intentionally running. Backups are scheduled but no access seems required. Inde...

Thanks, Sandshark, for the reply!
The logs give no indication of why the drive is constantly being accessed (it's a particular, repeating pattern of about 4 seconds)
The "Red" flags are Errors showing that a backup target drive had been removed.
All the TimeMachine backups have been removed.
There is no problem with the drive performance—it is always available and backup routines are running properly.
I'm running from a Mac, so are there tools you'd recommend??

Still would appreciate help with this!
Seagate 16TB drive(s) running constantly (in a repeating 4 second pattern of access).
Can someone PLEASE suggest a tool that will help me diagnose the problem?
thanks!

If you are ok with running ssh, then iotop might catch it. You'd need to install it with apt-get install iotop
As usual, you'd want to log in as root, using the NAS admin password.

Although I consider myself fairly technical (it's always relative, isn't it?) this recommended course of action is beyond my knowledge to know how to implement. I'm operating from a Mac OS.
t seems there must be a more straightforward diagnostic app...which I'd be willing to purchase...to assess, monitor, and repair the health of my drives.
Moreover, it seems the problem is common enough that someone should have heard of it before.
Do I need to purchase a tech support contract?
thanks all!

There's no evidence that there's any issue with the health of the drives, just a mystery on what causing the unexpected access. The ReadyNAS software doesn't tell you much on why, and AFAIK there is no third-party ReadyNAS app that would give you much more.
If you are concerned about disk/volume health, then I suggest running the maintenance functions (scrub, disk test, balance, and defrag) on a schedule. Navigate to the volume page of the admin web ui, and click on the the volume settings wheel to set this up. I run one of these functions every month (scrub in January, balance in February, disk test in March, defrag in April, etc). The order doesn't matter much, though I do like to space 2 months between scrub and disk test, because scrub also serves as a disk test (accessing all sectors on all drives).
Also, if you have apps installed on the NAS, then it is possible that one of the apps is responsible. Can you let us know that you have installed (if any)?

One simple thing you could try is remove the ethernet cable from the NAS. Then see if the access pattern stops after a minute or so. That would let you know if the access is in response to something coming over your network.
After that, perhaps try turning off the antivirus service, and see if that makes a difference.
If you have File Search enabled, then I'd try disabling that next. Then the Audit function if you use it.
Would you be comfortable with someone reviewing the log zip file? If there is something wrong with the system, that should give some clues.
