ReadyNAS 3100 update

I have a ReadyNAS 3100 whose firmware release is v4.2.22.

The NAS mounts 4 Seagate ST33000650NS disks with a capacity of 3TB each one.

I want to update the firmware.

Which version can/sould I update to?

Should I perform a step-by-step update?

Is there any possible problem related to the disk type and size?

Can I update with no risk to lose data on the NAS?

Regards

marius

If I recall correctly we had a setting to optimise performance, but with recent versions of Windows it led to usage being recorded incorrectly in Windows Explorer. So we changed the setting back in a firmware update.

That is my recollection also.  Which means that the space reported by windows is incorrect, and the files aren't using that much space.

You can confirm this by looking at the space reported by the NAS, not by windows.

    Hello marius_roma,

The latest firmware for your ReadyNAS is 4.2.28.

You may update to the latest either the auto update through the FrontView or locally. Updating firmware does not affect data unless you factory reset.

You also don't need to do any interim firmware to jump to the latest 4.2.28.

Whilst a firmware update doesn't affect the data, it would still be advisable to update your regular backup before installing the firmware update. After all no important data should be stored on just the one device.

One of the reasons because we are updating the NAS is that in CIFS shares the space is allocated so that a 1KB file uses 100 MB of disk space.

Can the firmware update solve this issue?

If so, what have we to do in order to optimize disk space use and make 1KB file waste less than 100 MB?

Is it advisable to create new shares or to make nay change in confnguration?

        Regards

        marius
