ReadyNAS 314 powering down on its own??
Hi all, Sorry if this is not the right place to post my question, I'm hoping for some ReadyNAS expert advice. I've got a ReadyNAS 31400 with 4 x 3TB WD Red that shuts itself down for no apparent rea...

I'm seeing one reboot with no explanation in the logs on April 1.
Your initrd.log shows
[2018/01/27 21:08:44 UTC] Updated from ReadyNASOS 6.9.1 (ReadyNASOS) to 6.9.2 (ReadyNASOS). [2018/04/04 21:08:23 UTC] Updated from ReadyNASOS 6.9.3 (ReadyNASOS) to 6.9.3 (ReadyNASOS).
So were you on 6.9.2 or 6.9.3 when this problem started? Have you seen this problem since updating to 6.9.3?
How did you update to 6.9.3?
I can see you're using anti-virus. There was an issue with that that was fixed in 6.9.3.
Your backup share is using 99% of it's quota.
I'm seeing a message about the hostname being invalid: "The host name contains illegal characters. This may cause undefined behavior when using some network services. Please change the host name using only valid characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -)"
Your data volume has less than 10% free. You should either free up some space or expand your data volume.

Hi mgdm,
Thanks for the feedback, I've added notes in italics to your questions below
- So were you on 6.9.2 or 6.9.3 when this problem started? Have you seen this problem since updating to 6.9.3? NP: Unit was on 6.9.2 when the issues started. On one of the times it booted and stayed up for a few minutes it alerted that an OS upgrade was available so I triggered it hoping it might resolve the issue.
- How did you update to 6.9.3? NP: By following the pop up upgrade link from the home/status page.
- I can see you're using anti-virus. There was an issue with that that was fixed in 6.9.3. NP: thanks for the info.
Your backup share is using 99% of it's quota. NP: I'll extend the quota when I can get into the system and delete the snapshots to release capacity.
I'm seeing a message about the hostname being invalid: "The host name contains illegal characters. This may cause undefined behavior when using some network services. Please change the host name using only valid characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -)" NP: The host name has been that way for 2 years but I'll certainly look to change it if I can get the system to stay up long enough.
Your data volume has less than 10% free. You should either free up some space or expand your data volume. NP: the volume did show in "red status" at >90% used but the volume info showed more than 4TB consisted of snapshots. I began to delete these but the system went down before I could get to them all. Even with the disks removed the system will not boot/stay up - this does not seem normal??
Thanks again for your help.
Regards.

I do wonder if there could be a hardware issue but the warranty is for the original purchaser from an authorised reseller only.
- NormanPApr 06, 2018AspirantHi mdgm,
Do you know if Netgear do a “paid for” repair service? Or sell spares? It would be a lot of money to lose.

OK so it looks like I've got an expensive doorstop. To read the data from these disks, is there a compatible netgear model (or other manufacturer) that I should be looking for? And do the RN424/RN214 support the Apps that the 314 did?
Thanks

If you want to migrate the disks, then your 4-bay ReadyNAS options are the RN214, RN424, or RN524. All are current platforms. The RN424 is the successor to your RN314.
All will be able show your data volume. Apps are another matter, they generally don't migrate from x86 to arm. So there would be some extra work if you go with the RN214. What apps do you use?

Hi Stephen,
I use RNairprint (from RNExtras - it is an "airprint" type server for apple devices), and Logitech Media Server. I also had TVmobili on there but not used it for some time so I could probably live without it.
Thanks

I just had it disabled until I could confirm it still works with 6.9.3. As it does it is available again.

I would go with the RN424 or RN524X
It is possible to attempt to recover data (at your own risk) e.g. using an ordinary x86 Linux Machine if you prefer.
