Netgear ReadyNAS 104 won't power up.

On Sunday at 3:15 pm I got an email notification that reads "Detected high spin retry count: [262144] on disk 1 (Internal) [TOSHIBA DT01ACA200, Y2S3T8DAS].  This condition often indicates an impending failure. Be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy."

Then at 3:27 pm I got another notification that read "Detected high spin retry count: [262144] on disk 2 (Internal) [TOSHIBA DT01ACA200, Y2S3T85AS].  This condition often indicates an impending failure. Be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy."

Then at 4:05 pm I got another notification that said "Error backup job nas-XX-XX-XX_to_nas-XX-XX-XY: Source cannot be mounted on the system." This was when a backup was scheduled to happen between my two NAS units.

I didn't see these notifications until later Sunday evening and when I checked the NAS with the errors it was powered off and would not power back on so I left it until Monday morning and then unplugged the power cord for about 5 minutes. Re-attached the power cord and plugged in in. The unit powered back up and booted with no errors. After about 5 minutes I powered it off and moved it back to its proper location. Then it again would not power back up. I removed the drives and it still would not power back up. No luck so now it seems to be dead.

I have read if you have another NAS running the same version of software I can take the drives out of the NAS that won't power back up and I should be able to access those drives. My other NAS is a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro so if take the 4 drives out of the defective NAS and remove the 6 drives from the ReadyNAS Pro and put the 4 drives in it I should be able to access those drives.

However I am a bit leary of it doing the same thing to the ReadyNAS Pro that it did to the Ready NAS 104 if two of those drives are defective as the notifications originally stated. Is it possible putting those drives in the ReadyNAS Pro that it will make it not being able to power it on?

  • I decided to risk the $26 for the new power supply. Got it today and it started right up with the new power supply so case is solved. Bad power supply.

You might try doing a risk-buy of the power adapter, and see if that brings it back to life.

You might also get an inexpensive dock that supplies its own power (not powered over USB).  Then try one disk at a time, and see if the disk is found   Windows won't recognize the format, but the disk manager will see it. You can also try Toshiba's utility here:

I agree you should be cautious about moving all the disks to another NAS.

Thank you for the reply. I will see if Windows can see the disks as I do have a powered dock I can put them in. I will also try the Toshiba utility.

OK I pulled the drives out and checked them out one by one on a Win11 computer. All 4 drives spun up and each had 3 partitions...a 4 gb, a 512 mb, and a 1858.51 gb partition on each and it said each was healthy.

The Toshiba Utility did not detect any of the drives.

After I put the drives back into the NAS I tried to power it up and it powered up and booted but I was not in a location with an ethernet cable so I could not access it so I powered it off, moved it back into it's location, plugged in the ethernet cable and it will now not power back up. No lights and no thing. Removed the ethernet cable and still won't power up. Removed the drives and still won't power up. Put the drives back in and still won't power back up.

Also I have checked the wall outlets and all have power.

Should I assume the hard drives are all OK and try them in the other NAS?

Have you tried plugging something else into the main power outlet?  I'm wondering if you tripped a breaker.
