Tech support upgraded the firmware remotely and now it is fine. Yes it seems the default firmware which got shipped with the nas was old and buggy.

The firmware installed to the disks, but the NAS flash also contains an installation image.
The OS-6 boot loader is supposed to detect any mismatch, and go with whatever firmware is newer (if the disk install is newer, then upgrade the flash, if the flash is newer, then upgrade the disks). Though that behavior is relatively new.
If you ever go through this again, it is good to do an test install with a scratch disk, and manually install the firmware that matches your old system. Then migrate the real disks.
Anyway, it's good that its resolved.
