If you update to a 6.1.9 RC (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=154&t=72282) and disable sync writes that should help.
Also make sure you use thick LUNs. Thin LUNs may take up less space on a volume but there is a performance trade-off.
I would suggest you put the NAS on a UPS.
