Diagnostics is run on boot. Not sure if the memory is tested regularly, but the hard disks are tested daily at 4am.
I guess it'd be too late to return the unit as faulty to your reseller in exchange for a new one? If it is too late for that then contact NetGear tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) and they should be able to arrange an RMA.
