ReadyNAS 516 Stopped functioning after 6.10.8 auto-update

Hello,

I am a home user, not a network admin, so please forgive my naivete in advance.

I have a ReadyNAS 516 with six 1TB drives that I have been faithfully using for nearly 9 years (hard to believe).  Looking at the e-mails that my ReadyNAS has sent out, it faithfully completed a backup every night to an external USB Drive that I have attached, through September 30th.

On September 30th at 1am, I got a System Notice email with the body:

Downloading firmware version (6.10.8) and will update firmware shortly.

At 1:01am, I got a System Notice email with the body:

The system is rebooting.

That's it.  Radio silence since then.  No backups.  My NAS administrative UI is no longer accessible.  My front panel says the basic NetGear Storage Welcome.  My OK button on the front panel flashes when pressed, but does nothing.  The front panel display does not change or react in any way.  The arrow menu around the OK button is not responsive.

What's my first step in troubleshooting this?

Have you tried pulling the plug, and then powering up the NAS again?

Yes. Exactly once so far. The fan was full blast, the panel and ok button oscillated blinking between the two. A few minutes later it quieted itself and returned to the behavior described in the initial post.

Does RAIDar find the NAS?  If it does, what status does it show?

Is it still using the original disks?
