There are new protocols involved with Windows 8, I believe one of two things need to happen for everything to work right. Windows 8 needs to comeout with updates to be backward compatible and also REadynas next update needs to include Windows 8 fixes. For one Windows uses a new SMB protocol version 2.2 so CIFS/SMB also has problems with it. As far as for DLNA a work around can be to Map the NAS on the PC and setup the windows 8 server as a media server instead of the NAS (I use Emit and it works awesome). I understand of the bottleneck issue but if you have a gigabit connection to the NAS it should hurt because either wawy your bottled down by the LAN speeds.
READNYAS--gigabit link---SWITCH----gigabitlink---windows 8
Media share ----------mapped to drive M:------------>windows 8
Then on windows 8 set it up as a media server using various 3rd party software
I use plex or emit
Both work wonders
