The puzzle here is that he shouldn't need a DLNA workaround because his WD player is not affected by the Windows 8 upgrade. That is why I suggested downgrading to 4.2.21.
Also, his only issue with Windows 8 was with DLNA, since he was accessing the NAS as a media server. I agree it would be easier to simply access the NAS using CIFS. That might work fine (note one other recent poster having issues with Windows 8 CIFS found his problem was with jumbo frames, now with windows 8 itself).
