These are on the USB drive?
Input/Output error doesn't sound like a permissions issue to me. You might need to reformat the drive. It might be worth running vendor diags (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital).
Hello
These errors are on the NASbox (sorry, I now realise that I wasn't clear). I have checked the SMART data on both NAS hard drives (which are Seagate ST2000VN000-1H3164 [1862 GB]) and see no change in their state ... they still appear to be healthy.
I realise that one solution would be to format the NAS HDDs and then use my USB backup copy to reinstate that data. It seems a drastic approach to take seeing as it *appears* that there are merely three files to remove in order to be back to where I was. I'd like to experiment with getting rid of the files first but being root on my own NASbox doesn't seem to help me.

I am thinking there might be some filesystem corruption. So perhaps you can try
- creating a new share, and move everything but those files into it.
- delete the original share
- reboot with a filesystem check.

I should have thought of that - there's enough space for me to do so. Thanks for this advice! I will try it over the next few days and we'll see if that sorts me out.Again, thanks.
