Your drive SMART stats say 18547 hours power on - which is 2 years not three. So I agree it is a little early.
When disk I/O fails, bad stuff happens. It's supposed to be graceful, but sometimes isn't - especially when ATA commands error out.
Anyway, back up the data while you are waiting for a replacement drive.
