Quick update for anyone else searching this forum with a similar problem. Pulling the suspect Seagate drive stopped the lockups, so it looked like a good candidate for being the culprit.
Although the lockups have stopped, I am still having problems....activating any usb backup via the front button no longer works, although kicking off the same backup job from FrontView seems to work OK(ish). Not sure if this is because I've only got one disk in slot 2 and a binking error light for the now empty disk one.
Looking deep into the logs I also found an error message about failing flash memory that requires me to contact Netgear support. The first occurrence of this error was around the time of my first NAS lockup....which probably isn't coincidental.
I'm not sure whether to persist with trying to get the thing to behave or if I should just give up and buy a new (non Netgear) NAS?! I've read good things about Synology gear, anyone have any good/bad experience with them?
