ReadyNas Duo - hard drive upgrade options

Hi, Currently I have 2 x ReadyNas Duo sat on my hub and we have various PC and TV access it mostly for streaming movies or backed up storage of photos etc. Duo1 has 2 x 2Tb drives in, 3/4 in use, and Duo2 has a single 2Tb drive in over half used. I thought to make it simple I would fit 2 x 4Tb drives into Duo1, then once sync'ed up and useable to copy stuff from Duo2 into there so I can give my Duo2 away to a family member. I hot swapped 1 new 4Tb seagate drive into Duo 1 and it shows me "dead drive", doesnt seem to recognise it at all. I tried the same drive into Duo 2 and it doesnt recognise a 2nd drive is in place.
First question, is the Duo with RAIDiator 4.1.14 (latest software) able to accept a 4Tb drive, or is it limited to the 2Tb I already had in there. If that is my problem and no way around it, what would you buy to replace a single Duo bearing in mind I wasnt intending buying anything ;-) I was wondering if a ReadyNAS 102 would accept the 4Tb drives or would I need to go to something better (more expensive).

Edit: since a 104 isnt a lot more expensive than a 102, I am now looking towards them, just hoping they take 4Tb drives now.

Thanks in advance for your upgrading advice
Tony :)

  • Your duos will not take 4 TB drives, they are limited to 2 TB drives. I assume they are both running 4.1.14 and are therefore both Duo v1s.

The 102 and 104 will take 4 TB drives. There is a 16 TB volume size limit on the 104. You could use 5 TB drives in the 104 I'm Xraid or raid5, however Netgear are not going to put any 5 TB drives on the HCL for the 104.
  • Brilliant, they are v1 I think with 4.1.14 so thanks for the confirmation. I have splashed out on a 104 now thinking that was going to be the case and I dont see me ever needing to go over 16T so I can migrate both Duos out to the 104 once its here. One more question, If I lift a drive from Duo1 and put it into 104 will it be immediately recognised with my data on it already and I can then sync to one of the new drives at a time.... or do I have to insert new empty discs first and then copy files over my network from Duo1 and Duo2 into the 104 ?
    Thanks
    Tony :)
  • You can't migrate the drives.
Set up the new nas and copy the data over the LAN. Using backup jobs is the method of choice. Whatever method you choose, I would verify the backup, perhaps by changing each backup job to rsync and running it again.
  • OK great, many thanks for the help and hopefully I will be up and running again by the end of the week.
