Readynas DUO partly lost acces
Dear all,
Since a while have some issues with the Readynas Duo which was running at that time at least for 2,5 years trouble free (apart of a few reboots in between). Disk 1 was factory fitted (500 GB Seagate Barracuda), second drive was the same type fitted in the store where I bought the device.
The first symptom was that I was unable to get connected to frontview. Although the shares on the DUO where good accesible, the connection to frontview timed out. A cold reboot did the trick to have same working again. Strangely did see an error afterwards 'Improper shutdown detected' even though same was done as per the manual (pressing the power button for abt 5-10 seconds). The last issue is still seen frequently when shutdown by the power button (not always).
Secondly a few weeks ago there was a power cut causing an unwanted shutdown of the DUO. Since then the reallocated sector count started to increase relative quick. Acces to frontview was still problematic sometimes, only solveable by rebooting the DUO.
Last week after returning from my holiday powered up the DUO and found out that drive 2 was dead. Due to that have decided it was time to replace disks as also smart errors on disk 1 were increasing and bought 2 WD Caviar Green drives.
Have been stupid (rtfm) and thought to be clever and clone the old drive (clonezilla), that did not work. Have eventually placed the new drive in slot 2 whereafter the new volume was synced but only after I did upgrade the firmware to version 4.1.8. As the x-raid configuration worked good again have not replaced disk 1 yet (although as mentioned have the new drive available already).
Since the new raid array is working have seen several times that there are connectivity issues. Last weekend for instance lost share acces, couldn't ping, raidar couldn't detect the DUO. Even the powerbutton seemed not to respond, and was forced to disconnect the DUO's power cable.
After restarting all worked fine again. Today I noted that I could not acces the shares anymore, a ping worked ok also raidar detected the NAS properly. The router status also showed the NAS to be connected. Only way to get it working again was to shutdown and restart the nas with the front button.
Could this be an issue with the new firmware? Also read other user issues where additional services running seemed to cause problems (as far as to my best knowledge have only the torrent client running). The readynas is connected directly to a linksys dd-wrt router, where all the issues so far have been seen on a desktop pc wired connected to the same router. That pc is running mainly windows vista (seldom use the double boot option to Ubuntu).
Would be pleased to hear any comments.
Kind regards,
Jeroen

- Try to perform an OS re-install. Please follow the steps from the link below:
http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=5029
Note: Please make sure NOT to hold down the reset button for more than 20 seconds, do NOT wait for the second blink of the hard drive lights as it will restore the NAS to factory defaults and will format the hard drives.
1. Power down the ReadyNAS.
2. Locate the reset pinhole. The pinhole is next to the USB port in the back.
3. Get a straightened paper clip and depress the hidden switch in the pinhole while the power is off, and then power on the ReadyNAS, keeping the switch depressed for about 5 secs.
4. You will see the drive LEDs in the front blink once. Release the switch at immediately. Do not wait for the 2nd blink which will cause the ReadyNAS to reset itself to factory default and wiping out your data. If you see the LED flash a 2nd time, turn off the power immediately from the back. - yoroenAspirantThanks for that suggestion. Have to apologize as I did miss to mention in the sequence of events that I did perform this already a couple of days ago. Same was based on the issue that I found when logging on the frontview that only 'Readynass NULL' was displayed. After the mentioned procedure it worked better. Can give it another go, but shouldn't one attempt be enough?
- Re-downloading and re-installing the firwmare can also be an option. You may also want to contact support. Once you get a ticket, edit the subject of your post and add it at the end. Thanks!
- yoroenAspirantIt seems that the issues were caused by the old disk still in the NAS. After replacing that one and extending the raid volume it seems the NAS is working trouble free again (at least for almost a week now). Thanks for your assistance!
- No worries! :)
