ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 V2 and Mac "Time Machine"

Would my ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 V2 be suitable for Mac Catalina "Time Machine" backups? Perhaps by letting Time Machine reformat?

Not sure of the current ReadyNAS firmware version!

Contains 2 x WD20EARX 2TB drives.

Thanks for any help - Dave H.

You can find that either by access the admin web ui, or by using RAIDar.

It'd be helpful to know if it is running 4.1.x firmware or 5.3.x.

Alternatively:  Does the Duo say "Duo" on the front panel, or does it say "Duo v2"?  The labeling can be confusing, and many v1 owners think they have a v2.  But if you are running 4.1.x and have "Duo" on the front panel, then you have a Duo v1.

Both support time machine, but I'm not a Mac user, and can't confirm if that works with Catalina or not.

Not sure what you mean by this.  But the ReadyNAS isn't just a disk enclosure.  Its a specialized linux computer, and the linux software formats the disks.  You can't reformat them with Time Machine (or the Mac).

I'll need time to check that - but I will.

      On the front: "ReadyNAS Duo"

On the underside label it has printed: "NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 v2"

      Worth a try then!

If Time Machine sees/finds an odd format it will ask to reformat. In this case maybe it doesn't need to - or in fact can't, from what you say.

Many thanks for your reply - If I get it all working (or not!) I'll report back - many help other people.

As I said, the labeling is confusing.  You have the original Duo (called a v1 here).  That other label means you have hardware revision 2 of the Duo v1.  The Duo was launched in 2008, and Netgear stopped shipping it on late 2011.

Your Duo will be running 4.1.x firmware.  The current version is 4.1.16 - if you are running something older you should update it.

One challenge with the Duo (either version) is that they are limited to SMB v1.  That will create issues accessing network shares from both Windows 10 and (I think) Catalina.  It's easy to re-enable SMB v1 in Windows - not sure what it takes with Catalina.
