NetGear does backport patches where it can and does tend to gradually update the kernel over time picking kernels that have proven to be good ones.
USB issues is an area of focus at the moment.
You're not going to get speeds of 120MB/s over USB3. USB is a resource hog. You should get faster speeds than on the front USB 2.0 port but don't expect the impossible. Disk speed, CPU etc. are all limiting factors.
