If you have a windows PC, perhaps try NasTester to benchmark the SMB performance (http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance)
Did you change anything in the network - particularly a switch or router? Is the connection ethernet or WiFi/powerline?
Many players use fast ethernet connections. If you have a gigabit network, then you often run see these symptoms if the switch/router nearest the player doesn't support ethernet flow control. what happens is that packets queue up in the switch (which is downspeeding the connection), and w/o flow control the packets might sometimes overflow the queue.
