ReadyNAS Duo with APC ES 450 UPS

Good point. The router/switch uses very little power and can be safely left to shutdown once the UPS battery has drained, but its power must be connected to the UPS. The shutdown commands are sent to the NASes well before the UPS battery has finished draining to give enough time for the units to shutdown. With at least some APC units you have the option of setting when you want the shutdown to occur.
