Your son could probably still get support, saying that his unit was in a remote location.
More to the point, identifying a v1 vs v2 is harder than it should be. A definitive guide is here: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/
The default password for the v1 is "netgear1", so try that first. You can try the OS reinstall again (the procedure varies by platform). Read pages 15-16 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 6Dec11.pdf
It that still fails, then I suggest deleting the existing partitions on your current drives - which will force the NAS to re-format them. This rebuilds the NAS OS, and will also wipe your data. If you want more guidance on how to do that, let us know.
