it's not a managed switch. I'll try flow control but it does the same thing when accessing through vpn. it usually doesn't connect

Tried the flow control and still getting the issue. My mac computer is alwasy able to connect and hold a connection but the 3 windows computers all have disconnection issues and are usually not able to connect for a few min every half hour.

Is there something else I could try?

Is the Mac using AFP or CIFS? Is it connected to the same switch as the Windows PCs?

    You could possibly try using the SMB plus to configure the NAS to use older SMB protocols.
    
    Though the packet loss issue on the NAS still would hurt performance.
