Packet loss should all computers on the path that has loss. So if the Mac is now running acceptably maybe we should be trying something else. That was I what I was thinking about SMB Plus.
The first step is to download the app of course. Try resetting the SMB version to SMB 2.1 and see if that makes any difference.

changing to smb 2.1 helped a little bit, but there are still "unable to connect" errors at least twice a day

I was having enormous problems with Windows and Macs dropping connections to my new ReadyNAS 316. I also had incredibly slow response, file save failures when editing files on the ReadyNAS mapped shares in Windows, and other symptoms of the dropped connection. Oddly, Linux had no issues whatsoever. On a whim, I deleted the bonded Ethernet adapter and let the adapters operate with separate IP addresses. The slowness, dropped connections, flakiness ALL disappeared. The two ethernet ports are connected on the same 16-port switch as the Windows and Linux systems, though the Mac connects to a switch that is connected to the ReadyNAS' switch over a Fiber link. Since the ReadyNAS and Windows systems (which has problems) and Linux systems (which operated just fine) were all on the same switch, I concluded that the issue was with Windows (and Mac) having some difficulty "believing" that the bond was really one adapter. It might have been the style of bond i was using -- Transmit Load Balancing. I am trying to see if just using the second Ethernet as a backup in case the first fails will allow me to make use of the bond without causing Windows systems and Macs to lose their minds.

What bonding mode were you using?
