The default is X-RAID. During the initial setup, you have 10 minutes to change the settings using RAIDar (see http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=425 on how to change it to FlexRAID 0, 1 or 5).
You can check the setting by using RAIDar and hovering over the "Volume" column or going into Frontview and looking at the main screen. In the example below, you can see that my 6-bay Pro is configured for X-RAID2, it's redundant and has 1490 GB used of 2287 GB (65%):


As for problem #2, I also suspect a bad disk. Try following these instructions for testing: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=388
