When you set the fixed I.P. you probably didn't set the correct DNS or Gateway. A better method is to get your router to assign a static I.P. address to the MAC address of the NIC in your NAS and get the NAS to receive an I.P. address via DHCP from router. This way your NAS still gets a static I.P. address but it should be readily accessible should you change your router again.
