ReadyNAS NV+ Hanging on Boot....

Hi all,

I've been reading many posts about this issue for other users. We have a legacy ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000 unit. The guy who used to maintain it has gone and I have no idea what has been done to it in the past maintenance wise.

Last week I noticed it was off. When hit the power button it started a boot check. A few hours later I looked and noticed it was only at 45.7%. I left it running. A couple of days later I was here again and it was still at 45.7%, so I tried powering off with the power button and noting happened so I pulled the plug. Re-powered it and it quickly got to 50.4% and that's as far as it got. I tried rebooting again and this time it only got to 2.1%, now it only says "Booting..."

All drive lights are green on the front of the unit, but the blue power light is flashing.

Looking at this topic, seems to have possible solutions...http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=79621
However I'm not sure what they meant by which diagnostic tool they used in the first troubleshooting test. Do you put the drives into another housing? Leave one drive in the ReadyNAS housing and use a built in diagnostic tool?

My Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8 can't currently see the ReadyNAS unit, so I can't troubleshoot it with disc utility.

I'm not certain what firmware it is up to or if and when it was last updated or looked at.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading RAIDar for Mac OS X here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... -downloads That should discover the NAS and give you more status information on what is going on. That will also tell you the firmware version.

For disk troubleshooting, we normally suggest vendor diags (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for WDC). This requires access to a windows PC, since these tools are not available on macs. The approach is to power down the NAS, label the drives by slot number (so you can return them to the same slot), and then connect each drive to the PC via SATA or USB adapter. Then test each drives with the non-destructive tests in the vendor diags.

There is a way to defeat the boot-up volume check, and the NAS can also test the disk drives. Here's a link to the hardware manual: http://www.readynas.com/download/docume ... 6Dec11.pdf The information on the boot menu is on pages 23-24.

Do you know the admin password for the ReadyNAS? Do you have a backup of the data on the NAS?
  • Thank you for that reply. I have used RAIDar, originally it gave me some info, but now it doesn't. All lights were green but the power button flashed on the RAIDar window.

Netgear support has suggested bypassing the boot up check too, so I'll do that next time I'm at the unit. I don't know the password. The ReadyNAS is/was the cold storage drive.

If you are ok with linux, there's a procedure you can use to access the data w/o the NAS. http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306

If you have 1 or 2 drives installed, note you can use linux reader (connecting a drive to the windows machine) http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ There are are two drives (RAID-1), only one will show the data partition. the NV+ hardware raid makes one disk a "parity disk" and the parity is written to the drive (but there is partition).

Netgear support of course might also get you back up and running.
