ReadyNAS NVX Hang on "Booting..."
Another identification number present: NGR-RNDX4000 (A)
Firmware: Unknown
Environment: Server backup storage, most likely UPS backed.
I'm sorry if this has been posted previously; I couldn't find any threads with this particular problem (with solutions at least)
Hi,
I have been given a ReadyNAS NVX to fix, which apparently was put into storage working, then brought out again dead. The person that gave it to me said he tried re-flasing the firmware with the USB Recovery Tool, but that didn't fix it.
When powered on, the ReadyNAS LCD hangs on "Booting..." I have read serial output from an external header on the unit, the units BIOS seems to post fine, proceeds to load the initial RAM disk successfully, however soon hangs when loading kernel modules, leading me to believe that the firmware/operating system on it has been corrupted. The same thing occurs for all boot options in the boot menu (OS Reinstall, tech support etc), with the exception of the memory testing option, which performs as expected.
I find it odd that the machines firmware would corrupt by itself when put in storage, so I believe it had a simpler issue to begin with (dead cmos battery from being unplugged etc) however was then broken more by the previous person whom I found out had been trying to flash ARM firmware on what's clearly an x86 machine.
Is there anything I can do to reflash the firmware on this? The USB Recovery option does not work, as the unit doesn't seem to get far enough into the operating system to manage it.
Edit: Sorry, I forgot to include that I have also tried recovery via TFTP, however the unit itself doesn't seem to support any kind of TFTP/PXE booting.
Thanks for your time.
For any curious who stumble across this thread, we ended up concluding a hardware fault.

Hi mdgm, thanks for the suggestion. Although I thought I tried all of those utilities, the link you suggested seems to be making more progress. However, I've tried 5 USB flash drives so far (In the front USB port) with each time the BIOS reports it cannot find an external flash device. The USBs are 512MB, 2GB, 4GB, 16GB and 32GB and none are being found. I'm going to continue trying more tomorrow, as I believe I'm just unlucky.
I'll continue to report on the progress, otherwise thankyou very much for your help, I've had this thing sitting around for a long time and would really like to get it working.

Did you connect the USB key to the front USB port?
What's the error message that you see exactly? Can you provide a screenshot?
Do you see "Could not find external flash device!" and then does the system automatically power itself off about 5-6 minutes later?
