ReadyNAS Pro6 fails to boot (at 98%, "Management service is offline") after hard shutdown

My ReadyNAS Pro 6 is using OS 6.10.10 - and had no issues in the past.
Recently, I had to replace a disk (because it started to show problems): 3 TB -> 6 TB (WD).
Replacing was no issue, syncing took a while (5h) but completed successfully.
So, I decided to add the 2nd 6 TB disk which I've purchased - which means: I was using 3 bays of my 6 bays:

Bay 1: new 6 TB disk (because my old 3 TB disk was starting to fail)

Bay 2: old 3 TB disk (which was used to sync disk 1)

Bay 3: additional (new) 6 TB disk (starting to sync)

The newly added disk took more than 1 day to sync.
So, after 1 full day, I decided to shut down the system - unfortunately, I seem to have pressed the button for too long, so it resulted in a hard shutdown.

Powering up resulted in a very long "booting" phase.
Ok, I gave another day to settle that. Did not help (stuck at 98%). Had to perform another hard shutdown.
Removing the newly added disk did not resolve the problem.

RAIDar shows my device (correct product name, serial number and all disks reported operational) - but reports that "Management service is offline". When I gently press the button at my ReadyNAS Pro 6 it shows "clamav-clamonacc.ser" (instead of "Booting...").

SSH seems to work. I'm able to logon as root.
But "rnutils" seems not to work. I'm also not able to perform a proper (soft) shutdown, anymore.

Any idea what's the cause and how to resolve it?

I've only removed drive #1 (troubled 3TB) first and replaced it with a new 6 TB drive; then powered up. That would resulted in a sycn (took about 5h).

Only afterwards (and after having shutdown the Pro 6) I've added the additional 6 TB drive. That 2nd sync did not succeed.

The second drive would have needed TWO syncs one for the original 3 TB partition, and then a second sync to expand using the extra capacity.  If the first sync succeeded, then it would be better to attempt to mount the volume with that disk install.  It would need to be inserted with the NAS powered down though.

Without logs, we don't know what we are dealing with.  It would be useful to see the disk partitioning, so if you could post the output of lsblk, that would be helpful.

While we might be able to get the volume mounted, there will be some corruption.  The best path is to do the reset and restore the files from backup.  In addition to getting you a clean system, it could well be the fastest path.

  • Update: it seems that /home is empty - also /home/admin does not exist

There are many UUID-named directories in the root directory - according to "ls -l" they are created in Dec 2017. But I've never seen them before.

Is the volume mounted?  /home is a mount point for /data/home - so if the volume isn't there, /home will also be empty.

Do you have a backup of the files?

Yes, I do have (weekly) backups but I'd like to avoid a factory reset.

Is there anything else I can try, first?

Not at all? Does rnutils create_system_log -o logfile.zip function?

Hard to sort out the cause with the information we have.  You could try tech support mode, and then attempt to assemble the RAID array and mount the volume manually.  If you do that, I'd put back the disk you removed (with the NAS powered down).

      rnutil create_system_log -o /tmp/logfile.zip
runs but seems not to terminate

      rnutl get_disk_info
      does not work either
