ReadyNAS NV+ hangs during file copy/move
I'm setting up a new ReadyNAS NV+ with my MacBook and am experiencing constant hangs or freezes trying to copy/move files between shares on the NV+.
When I first set up the NV+ (which is running the most recent Radiator, with three drives set to RAID X, share access via AFP only, and connected to the MacBook via a Time Capsule) I just dumped a swag of files onto it under a 'Test' share, as a way of aggregating content from a handful of external USB drives and an about-to-be-decommissioned desktop PC. That went fine.
But now I'm trying to get the NAS a bit better organised – creating separate shares for Documents, Pictures, Music, Video and Software – and moving folders from the Test share into the relevant share. And this is where things are constantly coming unstuck.
At best, I can get a few minutes into the process and then the thing just hangs, which also freezes the Mac's Finder to the extent where even a 'forced quit' on the Mac won't bring the Finder back to life. I end up having to shut down both the NV+ and MacBook by hitting their respective power buttons! I've also tried to copy rather than move the folders around, but same result.
Has anyone here experienced anything like this?

I have an 8-core mac pro with 4TB disk space and 32GB memory ... I would hope that's enough ;) - balevineAspirantThe ReadyNAS only comes with 256MB of RAM....that's the upgrade I'm talking bout.
- eiyamanakaAspirantI have two Macs both running Mac OS X 10.5.6 - an older iMac 17" Core Duo, and a brand spankin' new Mac Pro 2009 Quad Core 2.66GHz. The iMac doesn't support Jumbo Frames and has its MTU set to 1500, and the Mac Pro supports Jumbo Frames and has its MTU set to 9000. I have Cat6 cabling over a short distance (w/in 10 feet), which sees a fairly marginal improvement over Cat5e.
On the ReadyNAS NV+ (Firmware RAIDiator 4.1.4 [1.00a042] with 32% of 918 GB used), I have jumbo frames enabled, along with having disabled full data journaling, disable journaling, optimize for OS X and Enable fast CIFS writes. I also recently upgraded to 1GB with an approved Crucial SO-DIMM from Amazon.
When all three devices were connected on the same hardware compatibility list-approved (wired) gigabit ethernet switch with jumbo frame support - NetGear GS608 v2, both Macs experience the AFP-mounted shares Finder hang problem as discussed in this thread. This requires turning the power switch off in order to restart the Macs.
However when all three devices are connected to my non-listed D-Link DGS-2208 rev C1 gigabit switch with jumbo frame support, I don't encounter the AFP share Finder hang problem!!!
Here's some comparative performance numbers when, copying larger AVI files (700MB - 2GB):
My drives:
Disk 1 WDC WD5001ABYS-01YNA0 465 GB , 45 C / 113 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 2 WDC WD5001ABYS-01YNA0 465 GB , 47 C / 116 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 3 Seagate ST3500630AS 465 GB , 47 C / 116 F , Write-cache ON
Using AFP, before doing a backup-delete-restore from the ReadyNAS to an external drive (and my media files were very likely fragmented, since the ReadyNAS was 85% filled to capacity with frequent backups and file xfers), I was getting the following performance (shown by MenuMeters):
Mac Pro - 12 to 20 MB/s, with sustained bursts between 35 to 40 MB/s
iMac - 8 to 15 MB/s, with sustained bursts between 20 to 30 MB/s
Using AFP, after backup-delete-restoring to defragment my files, I have started getting the following speeds:
Mac Pro - 25 to 35 MB/s, with sustained bursts between 45 to 60 MB/s
iMac - 15 to 20 MB/s, with sustained bursts between 25 to 35 MB/s
On the Netgear GS608 switch, because of Mac OS X 10.5.6, I was forced to use SMB/CIFS sharing (and before defragmenting), where my Mac Pro only saw 8 to 15 MB/s with bursts up to 25 MB/s.
I'm just glad I had two different gigabit switches and thought to try swapping them out! Has anyone else had any success with different switches? - balevineAspirantI had wondered the same thing...it doesn't seem like the HCL is very long or has much info. I had hoped to hear from folks on this.
Also, are you sure the AFP hangs can really be traced to the switch you're using? - manfredellAspirantI've been hit by the same thing now.

Running 10.5.6 and connecting to a Pro runnning 4.2.4 This is just no good and makes the Pro unusable for me now. - eiyamanakaAspirant

Damn. RAIDiator 4.1.5 reintroduced the error, so it must be some combination/interaction between hardware and software. With 4.1.4, I definitely saw the difference between the two gigabit switches.
I didn't try the "broken with 4.1.4" switch with 4.1.5. I downgraded back to 4.1.4, and everything's stable again with the D-Link switch.
Bottom line: I *really* hope Apple has fixed AFP with Leopard 10.5.7. The ReadyNAS is not the lone sufferer with this AFP/10.5.6 problem; I saw a post on Synology as well. - larsdAspirantHi guys,
I'm very grateful that KrisW has submitted a ticket with Apple for this problem, it's driving me crazy. It renders my ReadyNAS unusabe for now...
Is there any updates on this problem?

Lars - shaunchitAspirantHello Guy
I was pretty sure there was a Flow Control problem with 10.5.6 and I was right. 10.5.7 has fixed my problem with speed/Hanging.

Improves the reliability and accuracy of Unit Converter, Stocks, Weather and Movies Dashboard widgets.
Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail.
Improves reliability when syncing contacts with Yahoo!.
Expansion Slot Utility for Mac Pro now reports the correct PCIe slot configuration.
Improves network performance when connected to certain Ethernet switches that have Flow Control enabled.
Improves stability for network home directories hosted by Mac OS X Server v10.4.
Improves Finder search results for network volumes that may not support Spotlight searching, such as Mac OS X Server v10.4, Time Capsule, and third-party AFP servers.
Includes several improvements to Directory Service and Client Management."
Everything for me is perfect now. - aaron_sfAspirant

still locking up for me ... it 'seemed' to get a lot further and faster... but hung right at the end.... so that i had to power off the mac...
after that TM can't seem to connect to the NAS ... you just get the pizza wheel
pleeeeease fix this....
switching back to local drive :( - KrisWAspirantHi,
Just to let you know that 10.5.7 fixed my original problem. It was only after getting a request for more info from Apple that I tried it again (I've been living in CIFS mode  since the original problem).
I have attached the bug description from my original problem report below. If this isn't your problem, then you've got a different issue..01-Mar-2009 06:28 PM:
10.5.6 has serious problems with netatalk-served AFP shares.
Reproduce:
0. Configure a third-party NAS to share a volume by AFP
1. Mount the share via AFP
2. Try to copy a large file from one folder of the share to another folder on the same share. I am able to reproduce this 100% if I use the application Max to convert about 100 Apple Lossless files to MP3 (both the alac and mp3 files are on the AFP share)
Expected:
Files to be copied/read/moved.
Actual:
Finder begins to copy, then hangs. In fact, It hangs so badly that Force-quit stops working, and a hard reset is required (power button for 4sec)
