ReadyNAS NV, iTunes and Apple TV2
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to host my iTunes library on my ReadyNAS and stream movies and music to my Apple TV? What I want to do, is access all my tracks and movies without having my Macs turned on and pull the feed from my ReadyNAS which is always running.
Is this possible and if so, can something explain in simple steps how to get it working?
Many thanks
Phil

- sphardy1ApprenticeNo - not possible. You are constrained in having the NV and not a newer x86 NAS that would enable options that might be acceptable. But even then you would probably need to jailbreak your ATV as otherwise it is inextricably linked to iTunes when it comes to video streaming.
Maybe consider investing in a mac mini - even 2nd hand - that you could tuck away next to your NAS and dedicate to itunes & managing your media, such that your NAS is then a pure storage device - PBCAspirantOuch - that is a real pity, having the NAS with loads of storage seemed the best option.
Is it possible to store the iTunes library and movies on the NAS and feed via one of my Macs? Not ideal, but having to turn on the iMac is minor and saves the expense of a Mac Mini.
Thanks
Phil - sphardy1ApprenticeYes - absolutely. My suggestion re. the mac-mini was to do exactly that and so not tie up one of your other macs. This is how I do it today
- PBCAspirantAh ok; slowly sinking in :-)
I assume it is as simple as placing the iTunes library on the ReadyNAS and pointing iTunes at it ?
Thanks
Phil - PBCAspirantHmm, still on this subject - what is the difference between pointing iTunes to a share on the ReadyNAS for the iTunes library and using the iTunes Streaming Server on the ReadyNAS?
Appreciate all the help
Thanks
Phil - matgrAspirantIt sucks really that with an AppleTV (non jailbroken) you have to have a computer on and iTunes open even if all your media is on a NAS.
- PBCAspirantAgree would be nice to run off the NAS and not a Mac.

iTune pointed to a share: you have all your media stored in one central location, and the full functionality of iTunes being able to stream all media to other devices
iTunes Streaming Server: A service running on the NAS that will allow any iTunes user to access compatible & non-DRM music stored on the NAS. The Server appears in the "Shared" section of your iTunes sidebar, just as another iTunes installation on a different computer would. - You can store all your music on the nas and then use iTunes server. This will allow you to access your music on the nas via the Apple TV without your computer being on. That's the easy bit. There is a rumour that the next version of IOS for the ATV will introduce an App store. If that ever happens then you will be able to install Plex on your ATV without jail breaking it. There is a Plex server version available for the nas.
- PBCAspirantJust to confirm, will running the iTunes server on the NAS allow me to stream movies to an Apple TV? I was under the impression based on earlier answers that you can't do this?
Thanks
Phil
