ReadyNas NV+ Kernel Panic 2TB Drives?

My old ReadyNAS NV+ died, power supply failure I think. Rather than fixing, I just bought another on eBay. I put all my 4 x 2TB drives in it and powered up. It won't boot, the display shows Kernel Panic. This is a reproducible error.

 

I tested the unit with 4 X 1TB drives and it boots fine. Thinking the drive size might be a problem I checked and found that 2TB is the max size for the ReadyNas NV+.

 

Any suggestions?

  • First check the firmware on the NAS.  If it is very old, then it is possible that it simply doesn't support the disk partitioning (which changed over the years).  I think it's not too likely, but you never know with old used systems.  Post back on the firmware if it is older than 4.1.8 (which added 2 TB disk support).

     

    I am thinking it is more likely that there was some damage to the OS partition on the disks and/or the data volume when the PSU failed.  That would be because of pending writes that never finished.

     

    I'm guessing you have no backup - if so, you should put a backup plan in place when/if you recover your data.  RAID simply isn't enough to keep your data safe.  You need backup(s) on other devices to do that.

     

    If you do have a backup, then just do a factory default from the boot menu (pages 23-24 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/Duov1_NV+v1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf )

     

    If not, there are two boot menu options that might help:

    • Booting skipping the file system check
    • Doing an OS reinstall

    If skipping the file system check works, then the issue is on the data volume.  Back up all the data, and do a factory default.  Then set up the NAS again and restore the data.

     

    The OS reinstall will do a partial reinstall of the OS partition contents.  The admin password will be reset to netgear1. The network configuration will also be reset to the default DHCP.  It shouldn't affect other settings or data.

     

    If both fail, then you are facing data recovery.  There are three options there

    The last option is the riskiest, and it only makes sense if you are already familiar with linux.

      Thank you for the help. I don't have a backup, but this unit was mostly an idling spare. I'll work through your suggestions slowly and see what I can recover or get going again.

        I worked my way through the suggestions. I couldn't get anything except kernel panic, so I ended up doing a factory reset. I got waiting for RAIDar, but I couldn't find this unit on RAIDar. I think I just got a lemon. I've asked the seller to provide a return.
