Can I at least test the 4 disks one at a time within a Windows 10 PC? Sorry for all the questions, but as a home user, it's a bit daunting buying PC kit in order to assess any potential damage to the disks.

Yes. Windows won't recognize the disk format, so they won't show up in file explorer. But you will see them in the Windows disk manager. Test them with Lifeguard for Western Digital; Seatools for Seagate.
Power down the NAS before removing disks, and label them by slot number as you remove them. Put them back in place before you power up the NAS.

Seatools will run enough of a diagnostic on your non-Seagate drives to know if they are the problem.

Yes, it should be able to run the long read test on the Samsungs.

Thank you everyone who has contributed to this post and pointed me in the right direction.
As my home PC doesn't have the necessary cables/connectors to plug the drives in to, I've decided to hand the unit over to a PC Support shop. It was getting to the point where my confidence in my own abilities was running out. Fingers crossed they can save something. I'm just hoping the unit wasn't set up as RAID 0...otherwise my data will be lost (or at least VERY expensive to try and retrieve).
Thanks again. This is a great community.
