ReadyNAS OS 6.1.5 RN104 Performance
Hey Guys,
I've had a ReadyNAS 104 for nearly a month now, and have been lurking and reading through these forums for several weeks... I started with 1 disk, then added 2 more, (now totaling 3 x 3 TB drives), it mirrored and then striped the disks, My performance isn't all too great, Read is fine at around 80-90 MB/sec on accessing large video files, but write is about 40 MB/sec, I'm guessing due to CPU limitations on calculating Parity data.
I noticed with the latest firmware it says "Improved performance with large volumes (Most likely seen on the ReadyNAS 104). A factory default is required to make the changes. Copy all data off the ReadyNAS, upgrade the firmware, factory default the unit, and copy all data back onto the device"
I'm just wondering if its worth the hassle of taking all my files off (currently about 40% full) installing/factory defaulting it, then dumping the data back on... As if the performance is about the same, I'm just going to say forget the hassle of a factory reset... Now if write performance improves a fair bit, to say 50-60 MB/sec or greater, then it would be completely worth my time. I use it for backing up 2 computers, and as a Media Storage Device for streaming DVD and Bluray rips to my HTPC, so mainly the biggest thing to pull off would be 800GB+ Movies, Default it, then re-do my computer backups and move the media back.
Just curious if anyone has done the update and factory default already yet or not and have seen a nice improvement on performance? If its negligible, I don't want to waste the several hours of time doing all this only to find out I get a couple extra MB/sec...
Thanks :)

- YeahhAspirantHow long should a data scrub take? I started the scrub process but it was excruciatingly slow. I think in an hour it was not even at .50% completed.
Also interesting is I tried to do a degrag but got an error. See link to screenshot below.

- YeahhAspirantWow...do I feel dumb. I just fixed my problem. I didn't realize that I was running the NAS performance tester from a remote drive...When I moved it to the actual laptop the readings came much more in line. I'm getting mid 50's write and mid 60's read. Might not be top performance but its acceptable for my needs.
- PigletLuminaryI just purchased a RN104 and after waiting 2 days for it to do the initial rebuild I'm not getting all that great speeds.
When I got it, it had 6.0.8 installed and I upgraded to 6.1.6 at once, then I proceeded to set up the volume. But now I'm concerned that something might have messed up and I'm not using the latest and greatest filesystem tweaks...
How can I check if the 6.1.6 "filesystem tweaks" (sector size change?) have been made? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFirstly, if you download the logs, what does initrd.log look like?
- PigletLuminaryinitrd:
[2014/02/11 12:17:30] Factory default initiated due to new disks (no RAID, no partitions)!
[2014/02/11 12:17:50] Defaulting to X-RAID2 mode, RAID level 5
[2014/02/11 12:18:15] Factory default initiated on ReadyNASOS 6.0.8.
[2014/02/11 12:30:57] Updated from ReadyNASOS 6.0.8 to 6.1.6.
Gah… that seems to indicate that the init started as soon as I turned it on. :x I assumed it wouldn't do that until I created the volume. I guess I have to start over? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt would be best to backup and do a factory default, yes.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you deleted the default volume and created a new one after updating to 6.1.6 it should be almost as good as if you had done a factory default but since you are not happy with your performance a factory default would be worth a try.
- PigletLuminaryThanks for the info. I'll bite the bullet and do a factory reset. I guess we'll know if it worked in 2 days or so. Sigh...
- PigletLuminaryTook about 23h to rebuild this time.
Speed seems reasonable over gigabit ethernet using AFP from my Mac mini running OS X 10.9.1. Writing is about 40-50MB/sec, and reading around 80MB/sec.
