ReadyNAS, Plex, and Sharp Aquos

To make a long story short. My ReadyNAS with the PLEX app installed and Sharp Aquos are in the same internal network (wired). If I go to the Aquos' DLNA menu and pick the PLEX Media Server many videos are missing. If I go to the ReadyNAS instead it actually has all the videos in my collection. Does the PLEX app help to play all these files? PLEX always boasts that it can transcode on the fly but it doesn't come through here. Can't blame the TV. Thanks ReadyNAS!

  • Well, there are potentially a few things going on in this post, some of which may be better addressed in the PLEX forums at http://forums.plex.tv/

I am indeed also curious about the PLEX version. 0.9.9.6 is current pre-release (for PlexPass subscribers) but I think 0.9.9.5 is available for everyone.

Despite it's ability to transcode the video on a particular platform, it should *still* show them in the library. Often PLEX will attempt to directplay without transcoding anyway, so in this case if the network bandwidth is good enough and the TV's app supports it -- I'm not aware Sharp platform has an app, so you must be using their DLNP client? -- then PLEX will always try first to drectplay.

Can you give examples of files that aren't showing up in PLEX? I presume they also do not appear if you attempt to access your PMS from the web or another client (like PlexHomeTheater on your computer(s))? I would expect so, but just checking. Can you tell us a little about how your library is set up, in terms of the missing files... movies, TV episodes, untagged "home" video...?

You mention that these files show up in ReadyDLNP -- well, I assume that's what you're referring to since you didn't mention it -- but do they PLAY? I can't seem to find that you mentioned that. Which also gets me wondering how their format. ReadyDLNP won't transcode, but if you you're throughput is sufficient they should stream OK -- presuming your TV's DLNP client recognized the stream format.

Thanks about the info in the 516 mdgm but I already bought the 316. I am very satisfied with it's performance though. I don't know what PMS version I'm running. If you can direct me to where I can find this information I can let you know.

Btaroli, I am using the Plex Home Theater 1.0 on my laptops which I think is fairly new. It was introduced last year. The Plex Server that I use came with the 316 and it updates when it has to. I have also noticed although the ReadyNAS Server shown on the Sharp Aquos does not show the MKV videos but it still shows more videos than the Plex Server. Yes, it does play the MP4 and avi. videos under the ReadyNAS Server.

As far as the Plex Server on the ReadyNAS is concerned I have very few complaints. Every media file is shown and none are missing on the NAS or my computers. The metadata rarely makes a mistake but it can be a quick fix. Out of over 4,000 movies about 30 were without metadata but this is what I did to manually insert the metadata.

    1. Enter into the Plex Server and into the folder of the show/movie with no metadata.

    2. The 5th icon from the top on the left hand side is "Fix Incorrect Match". This icon will actually force Plex to visit tvdb.com or The Movie Database.

    3. Pick the correct show/movie when a listing given and you will see Plex begin receiving metadata within a few seconds.

So to repeat: No missing files in PLEX home theater, Using DLNA from ReadyNAS Server to Sharp Aquos only the MKV files do not show. The .avi and MP4 files do and they play. What I like is that if you have episodes 1 - 10 of a show once the first episode ends it goes right into the second one and so on.
